Isn't this set by the state constitution?  Wouldn't there have to be a voter-approved ballot issue to change this?  Is there any chance the liberal state supreme court will slap this down?

I think the general fear is that Romney would appoint a Republican, when the people elected a Democrat (unless the people are extremely picky about which Democrat gets in.)

Yeah, but Nation, this happens ALL THE TIME. Why should Massachusetts be any different? The Democrats appointed a Democrat to fill John Heinz term when he died, same with Paul Coverdell when he died...what is so special about the People's Republic of Massachusetts that they should circumvent a long established rule of law and political tradition?Huh??
