I have a few flashbulb memories from the decade so far, but the only one that can be considered 'historic' is 9/11, unsurprisingly.

Funny thing, I was actually reading up on flashbulb memories a couple weeks ago.

2001, I guess, although the number itself is not exactly memorable, as I often have to think for a bit regarding which year 9/11 happened on.

2001 hands down.  Barring another terrorist attack in the US or the end of sustained violence in Afghanistan and/or Iraq 2001 will still be my choice in 2011.

2001, nothing has come even close to rivaling 9/11 so far this decade.

What can I say, I'm not good at remembering years.  If you ask me to write down the current year and we didn't just have a new one, I'll probably need a second or two to recall what it is.

Well Katrina almost did in terms of the number of the dead but not in how much people cared about it.

2000: Presidential Election; Florida controversy; Second Intifada begins; Dot-com burst.

2001: 9/11; War in Afghanistan.

2002: Midterm victory for Republicans; Iraq War debate.

2003: Iraq War launched; Saddam captured; Columbia Disaster.

2004: Indian Ocean tidal wave; Bush re-elected; Ukraine's Orange Revolution.

2005: 7/7 London attacks; EU Constitution rejected; Israeli settlement pullback; Hurricane Katrina.

2006: Midterm victory for Democrats; Israeli-Lebanon War; Saddam/Zarqawi dead.

I'd say:

2001-2004-2006-2003-2005-2002-2000

There are a few moments where EVERYONE can remember where they were and what they were doing when it happened.  Pearl Harbor, JFK Assassination, 9/11.  It is pretty hard to top those.

What happened in 2002 that made it the second most memorable year of the decade?

I remember 2002 as a year of war, unity and grief. Never before had the United States been more united than the months following 9/11. I feel that 2002 is runner-up.
