Dallas-based food chain to accept Mexican pesos

10:11 AM CST on Saturday, January 6, 2007
By KAREN ROBINSON-JACOBS / The Dallas Morning News

Starting Monday, patrons of the Dallas-based Pizza Patrón chain, which caters heavily to Latinos, will be able to purchase American pizzas with Mexican pesos.

Restaurant experts and economists said they knew of no other food chain with locations so far from the Mexican border offering such a service.

"We're trying to reach out to our core customer," Antonio Swad, president of Pizza Patrón Inc., said Friday.

"We know they come back [from Mexico] and have pesos left over. We want to be a convenient place for them to spend their pesos."

While U.S. restaurant chains have stepped up their marketing to Latino consumers and incorporated Latin flavors in the menu, it's unusual to see that outreach extend to the cash register.

"I think it's a very interesting idea," said Ron Paul, president of Technomic Inc., a Chicago-based restaurant market research firm. "They are catering to that audience."

But Mr. Paul said he did not see other chains rushing to emulate the program, in part because of bookkeeping headaches.

Interesting.  Any comments on the Mexicanization of the nation?

Do we have any Don Quixote's in the audience ready to tilt at windmills?

I do have to question using a conversion rate of 1 USD = 12 MXN, as it makes for rounding errors and other complication unless they get handed the pesos in multiples of 60 pesos. 1 MXN = 0.08 USD would avoid those hassles.

Many stores in Canada will accept US Dollars for payment, especially those selling Cuban cigars minus a small percentage they skim off. What are you complaining of, really?

And Canadian coins are accepted as currency just about everywhere in Alaska.

I think it's fine--if they want to deal w/ the exchange rate and stuff.  Up here in MI, we take Canadian coins--it's pretty easy to exchange big Canadian money at a bank/credit union, but I really don't care.

Dallas?!  That's like nine gazillion miles away.  You don't even want to ask me how many times I've entered my own country at Laredo, Brownsville, Chula Vista, or Nogales, and have held only pesos and no gas station attendant or fast food hack would even take me seriously when I asked that question.

Me:   "Acceptas pesos, senor?"

Fast Food guy:  "Claro que no.  Solamente dolares, homeboy."

Dallas?!  Now, if they can do that in Dallas, why not all those cities that border Brownsville, Laredo, San Diego, El Paso, etc.  Chincy bastards.  Well, it's about time.  If I can spend dollars (at a severe markup) in Cozumel, then why not pesos in Dallas?  Of course, you're better off spending pesos in Cozumel, and, at 12 per dollar, you're obviously better off spending dollars in Dallas, but then that's what you'd expect.  But it's nice to know that they're at least accepting them, if that's all you have and are willing to bear the brunt of the high exchange rate.  I've been in the situation many times where all I had was pesos and would have gladly paid 12 for a dollar, if only there's been any takers.  But no, I always had to lay down a credit card for an overpriced yankee motel in Brownsville and wait till morning till the banks opened so I could get dollars.

Viva Globalization!!

By the way, totally unrelated:  So I'm looking in the "TV Weekly" section of the Sunday paper a few minutes ago to see what's coming up, and I see that at 9pm central time PBS--my affiliate is on channel 7--is running "Anti-Semitism in the 21st Century" and TBS--mine comes in on channel 8-- is running "Family Guy"  Now, that's the very definition of redundant.

Obviously I don't mind about this, but what I do mind is the utter collapse of the US dollar under this administration - down to 35 baht now!

In most of the country, esp. Pattaya:

Freelancer - 500 baht = about $14
from bar - 500+300 'barfine' = close to $21

You can definitely find freelancers for 300 baht ($8.60), but quality is very low.

In Bangkok double the above prices, except Chinatown.
