Only extreme authoritarians or far right wingers would ever vote for Nader.

Uh, why?

With hindsight, I would vote for Nader over the liberal-bashing Clinton. There was absolutely no chance of a Republican victory, although Clinton underperformed at the end.

Do you by any chance know what Clinton's approval rating was on election day 1996? There's no way in hell it could have been as low as 49%....

iirc, it was in the high fifties or low sixties. One reason I've seen given for his relatively poor showing is the abysmal turnout- Democrats knew he was a guaranteed winner and didn't bother to get out and vote, allowing the committed Clinton-haters to hold him below the magic number.

One thing I will give Clinton credit for, and it's something I've rarely seen mentioned: his margin of victory (8.5 percent) was greater than George HW Bush's "landslide" margin over Dukakis (7.7 percent).

1. Clinton
2. Dole

I like Dole so I preferenced him.  In the 2000 and 2004 IRVs I only voted for Gore and Kerry.

Ralph Nader is a LaRouchite authoritarian who has ties to Karl Rove and Halliburton, and has bashed good liberals like Michael Moore.

Moore endorsed Nader in 2000.

Whatever your opinion of his politics, Nader has done a tremendous amount of good for the country with his consumer advocacy (which has earned him hatred from the corporate community for the most part). Costing Gore the Presidency in 2000 certainly lowers his opinion a lot in my eyes, but on balance he was still a great man.

Not in 2004, and Nader had some not so nice words for him.

This has been debunked on DU. Nader has always been a fraudster and a liar. He belongs in prison.

Well Moore's failure to endorse him in 2004 may have been the cause of Nader's not liking him anymore; it could go either way. Obviously a lot of liberals abandoned Nader after Nader cost Gore the 2000 election, and I don't blame them.

As for the fact that DU proves I'm wrong, well there's certainly no arguing with DU, now is there? Smiley I would be interested in seeing the analysis, but I'm most definitely not going to accept something coming from DU anymore than I would any "proof" that comes from FreeRepublic.

Right now Clinton  is one vote short of a majority before Nader is eliminated.
Not unlike the real result. Smiley
