I wasn't sure whether to post it here or in the international section.

He will undoubtedly be excoriated by the right for "political opportunism".

God grant us more such opportunists!

The more I hear about him the more I love him.  If he doesn't win the nomination he better be the VP candidate.  I think he could actually do a lot with the Vice Presidency and would hopefully ge the boost he needed to win the presidency after his boss retires.

He posted a diary on DailyKos about it.

Richardson has always been involved in global affairs since his days in the State Department and in the UN.  He is an active internationalist so I don't think the charge of "political opportunism" holds much water.  he's always done stuff like this

well-traveled, speaks fluent French and Spanish, Boston-bred, a true Democrat, popular governor.  I find him interesting

I agree with you totally.  But "holding water" has never been a requisite for radical, right wing slurs and accusations.

Richardson has moved into the top tier of candidates, IMO.  He could be President, VP or Secretary of State.

The Sudanese are notorious for reneging on their commitments.

I'll believe these commitments when I see them in action.

You're right to be skeptical.  And you're right about the Sudanese, historically.

I do think, on the whole, the cease-fire in the south has held.  At least, I am not receiving the frightful bulletins I once got from persecuted Anglicans.  But I still cast a very wary eye on Khartoum.

That said, Richardson was right to do what he did and gets kudos for his effort. Blessed are the peacemakers, and all that...  Shocked)
