Lincoln Chafee announces he is running as an Independent for Governor of Rhode Island in 2010.  With Governor Don Carcieri ineligible to seek a third term, the Republican Primary is won be Cranston Mayor Steve Laffey.  This sets up a Chafee-Laffey rematch.  Also running is Demorat Charles Fogarty, former Lieutenant Governor who lost narrowly to Carcieri in 2006.  Who would win?

I say Lincoln would win. I think he would be able to lead the assembly very well, and make a lot of progress for the state.

This is where I interject that Chafee likes the RI state GOP and would be unlikely to switch parties to run in a state race.

I'm curious how much he would continue to like them if they nominated Steve Laffey... Tongue

Well actually Chafee stated that he was considering leaving the Republican Party after his seat.  Belatedly, I might add.  If he had run as an Independent caucusing with the Democrats he would still be in office now.

correct.

and as weve seen, chafee would whip laffey in a gop primary.

i think chafee would have a good chance at being elected governor in 2010.  i doubt he wants it, though.

Chafee is done - thank God!

Republicans won't support him with his voting record. I don't think Democrats are going to trust him 100% either.

Fogarty would probably win, though Chafee would have a decent chance against a lesser-known Democrat.

After the 2006 campaign, Laffey's chances of getting elected statewide in RI are very low.

...Not that they were particularly high in the first place.

The funny thing is that everyone's favorite hack AuH2O predicted that Laffey would've beaten Whitehouse.

That doesn't mean that he can get elected to the Senate in RI, or any other Republican who is not named Chafee (and as we saw, it looks like even Republicans named Chafee can't anymore).

He did definitely say Laffey had a better chance than Webb though (LOL!)

Why are you defending Laffey anyway Walter? You said you would change your registration if he won the nomination.

i dont have anything against laffey.

i said i would change my registration if the republicans chose laffey over chafee.

that doesnt mean i wouldnt support laffey for some other office down the road.
