Being beautiful also makes it hard for people to take you seriously, and for people who bother to vote in midterm elections, someone being serious is more important than someone being beautiful, so she might have actually done better if she were ugly.

For someone who spends a few weeks a year in the north end of NY-20 (N. End of Lake George), I'd say a lot of people could have voted solely on looks
