What's really happening is that Shiite militias are crushing the Sunni insurgency by using the brutal tactics that we Americans were afraid to use. The Sunni-Shiite Civil War has started, and with their superior numbers and the support of Iran, the Shiites are bound to win.

The downside is that hatred and violence will be propagated, the country of Iraq will likely break up, and we could see another cycle of wars and violence lasting for 10, 50, 100, or 200 years.
What may be happening is the US forces essentially switching sides.
In which case I'll begin venerating Al as The Prophet, given that he compared Iraq to Northern Ireland '69 ages ago.
It would make sense given the US' and Iran's unfortunate and longlasting focus on each other.
It would finally provide the real country in behind that I've always told people is missing in comparison to Viet Nam.
It would also ensure that American blood is still spilled in Iraq in time to squash Al Gore or Barack Obama's hopes of reelection in 2012.

The day might yet come when American Iraq will rue the day it executed Saddam Hussein, not for ethical reasons but because he could still have been a useful ally.

Uh - less bloodshed? Of course that would require an end to Shi'a violence as well.
