So according to them, we are closer to a nuclear war than in 1947 and 1980?

Don't you think we should at least wait until countries actually have nukes (which Iran probably does not yet) that they can fire at North America and Europe (which North Korea probably does not yet) before we declare that we're all going to die in nuclear hellfire?

Note that global warming seems to have been added as a criteria for doomsday.

We have concluded that the dangers posed by climate change are nearly as dire as those posed by nuclear weapons. The effects may be less dramatic in the short term than the destruction that could be wrought by nuclear explosions, but over the next three to four decades climate change could cause drastic harm to the habitats upon which human societies depend for survival.

This deteriorating state of global affairs leads the Board of Directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists--in consultation with a Board of Sponsors that includes 18 Nobel laureates--to move the minute hand of the “Doomsday Clock” from seven to five minutes to midnight."

---

So, they think we're closer to nuclear annihilation because of…global warming?!

Translation...."We're nothing but a bunch biased political hacks promoting our own importance to the rest of society."

Well, their logic for that is that global warming=more nuclear power stations= more chance of proliferation= more chance of nuclear war.

more to the point, their logic is "we are smarter than you, just look at all of our awards we have awarded to ourselves and everything we have invented.  Therefore, you need us to rule over you in order to protect you from our inventions."

Given that it's an analog clock, who's really to say that it's just before midnight?  I like to think that it's nearly midday, which means that we have the whole afternoon and evening to piss away our resources and start as many wars as we want.  Let's act like it's the last day on earth.

I've always considered the Doomsday Clock to be a rather overzealous ploy to get people to actually pay attention to the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists.
