Unlawful Employment of Aliens Reform Bill

§1. Findings
   (a) There is an urgent need to ensure that Atlasian employers hire only Atlasian nations and those aliens legally admitted for employment.
   (b) Enhancing the system for the checking of documentation of employees by employers will help satisfy that need.

§2. Unlawful Employment of Aliens
Except that any reference to a specific year or date not determined in relation to the date of enactment shall be instead treated as a reference to a year or date one year later than the one currently in such text, Title III (Unlawful Employment of Aliens) of S.2611 (109th Congress), as engrossed by the U.S. Senate, shall be enacted as law.

Here's a link to the text of S.2611 (109th Congress).

This bill does four things:
1. Require employees to present picture ID that meets certain requirements to  their employer stating their identity.  (For most U.S. nationals this will be a driver's license or a State issued identity card.)
2. Require employers to use the now optional system for checking employee SSN's
3. Increases the number of immigration agents detailed to worksite enforcement.
4. Includes provisions intended to protect potential employees from either discrimination or error from the required identity check system

Aye, and I would ask those who voted nay to state why they are opposed to this measure.  The best way in my opinion to end illegal immigration is to make it tougher for illegal immigrants to find employment which is what this bill focuses on.

I'm curious also to know why some senators are against cracking down on this pretty big issue.  This bill is probably the best way to go about combating illegal immigration, aside from just shutting down the borders.  Any of the "nay" voters care to explain?

I favor an alternative approach to illegal immigration that would involve amnesty and easily obtainable citizenship.  Crack downs like these in the mean time act only as a stop gap measure while I believe my solution is more practical, humane, and comprehensive (I have introduced a relevant bill).

We've tried an amnesty-only approach before.  It didn't work then, and it won't work now.  I'm not opposed to including measures to provide for legalizing some of the ones already here, but we must have real and effective measures to discourage more illegals from coming.  Your approach is the real stop gap proposal, except that it has no stop, but plenty of gap.

Well considering that my opinion concerning immigration is that anyone should be allowed residency if they have been found to be in good health, to not have a criminal record in either the United States, their country of origin or any other country, that they are not affliated with terrorism or any other anti-American groups, and that they either have family currently residing within the United States or a contract for a job from an employer, your not really preaching to the right crowd here.

Also I was put off by the fact that, as far as I could tell, there are no measures in this bill to provide anyway for illegal immigrants already in America to become legal nor any way to make legal means of immigration more readily available.

Nay, I would vote in favour if provision was made for some form of amnesty for illegals currently working here.

This bill has enough votes to fail.  Senators have 24 hours to change their votes.
