Hillary Clinton wins the Democratic nomination for President and wins the November general election.  She resigns her Senate seat in early January 2009.  Who does Governor Eliot Spitzer nominate for the seat to replace her?  And would there be a special election?

Spitzer realizes that he must appoint someone reasonable as to not anger upstate NY so Reps like Rangel and Nadler are out.  I think he chooses someone from a moderate Dem district who still rather liberal like Steve Israel

No offense, but for what other reason than wishful thinking would Spitzer appoint a Republican?

The fair thing would be to appoint Nita Lowey (NY-18). She would have run for Hillary's seat in 2000, and is reasonably liberal but not too extreme, so she should be able to win a general election.

Spitzer could have a good chance to appoint an African American to the seat.  Possibly Gregory Meeks?  Andrew Cuomo is a possibility obviously.  Also Nydia Velazquez.  There are several strong candidates from minorities for the seat.

Yeh, I read yesterday that he is thinking about running if Hillary is elected President.

That's how most Kennedy men are, not even Jack could escape that one.  At least he didn't kill anyone like his brother.

I think Suozzi was a shoe in for it, but with his Primary run it makes it less so, though they have supposedly made up, and are working together helping Johnson's state Senate campaign.  As mentioned Israel, valezquez and Weiner are also possibilities.  Another possibility is Tom Dinapoli, who is a key member of the NY State Assembly.

I second Nita Lowey.

There is no "shoe" in "shoo-in."

I think Lowey might be too old at 72 in 2009.

I think he's already slated by the Dems to run for mayor in 2009 and I don't see a reasonable Republican challenge

Doubt it would happen again but you could see a Democrat jump ship for an easier Primary ala Bloomberg

Dont call Bloomberg a republican. He only ran as one to avoid the primary.

Considering that Lowey was the front-runner for the seat before Hillary came out of nowhere, she's the logical choice.

Plus it gets her out of my district Smiley
