The filing deadline for statewide office is Jan. 30th.

Does anyone know which Democrats have filed so far? Just curious b/c I haven't heard anything about this race in a long time, and it strikes me as odd that so far to my knowledge no big-name Democrat has stepped forward to challenge Ernie Fletcher who is also facing a strong intra-party challenge on top of being a very weakened candidate already.

We'll let you know when Governor Northup is inaugurated.  Move on.

I reiterate my call that we create a thread solely for the purpose of saving quotes like this one to look back at them in the future and laugh.

It's not even certain (yet?) that she'll beat Fletcher in the primary

That seems like much the most likely outcome now... far from a dead cert o/c.

Surely if she was that popular she would have been re-elected in November. Remember that the media and pundits had her down as a dead cert to win.

I've made this point before, but it's worth repeating; the interesting thing about Northup, is that the key to her wins in what has always been a very social polarised district wasn't winning over working class whites in large numbers (she must have done in 2004 (as she topped 60% across the district) but the Democratic candidate that year was just awful), but cutting into the usual overwhelming margins Democratic candidates can just about alwas expect from black voters (IIRC she usually took around about a third of black voters in Louisville in the elections in which she won).

Watch out, you might end up being the next AuH2O with statements like that.

I think Jonathan Miller and Daniel Mongiardo are running as Governor and Lieutenant Governor.  Former Governors Julian Caroll, Martha Layne Collins and Brereton Jones could also run as well as Attorney General Greg Stumbo.

Jones isn't running, which is a pity as he'd have been a decent candidate. Shame he didn't run for Senate in 2004 actually.

IIRC both Gatewood Galbraith and Peppy Martin are likely to run in the Democratic primary. I think the correct word to describe that is "lol".

No, they didn't.  They said she'd be one of the first to fall if it were a bad night for Republicans.

I predicted Northup losing for most of the campaign, and I was probably the only one here that had her as more likely to lose than Geoff Davis (although I have no clue why, since that's what polling said)

I think someone else said it best back in 2003 about this seat though: "We won't take back the House until take back this seat."

This is very interesting. Why was that? And did Yarmuth win now by winning over Blacks?

This is very interesting. Why was that?

Because she has very good relations with some community leaders in West End Louisville (some of which have even endorsed her at times IIRC) and was always careful to try to direct federal $$$ to that part of the city.

I think her old state house district used to have a fairly large Black population (which was removed in the last round of redistricting) but I'm not sure about that. It's certainly very close to the largely Black districts along the river though.

Up to a point yes; but she still took around about a fifth of the Black vote IIRC.

Some news from Politics1:

In Kentucky, US Senator Jim Bunning (R) endorsed former Congresswoman Anne Northup on Monday in her primary challenge to Governor Ernie Fletcher (R). Also, former Lieutenant Governor Steve Henry (D) and State House Speaker Jody Richards (D) will both announce gubernatorial candidacies this week. Richards' runningmate will be former Secretary of State John Y. Brown III...

Northup's strongholds slightly underperformed, and Yarmuth's strongholds slightly overperformed.
