I'm gonna guess Barack Obama will be the next one.

After that, I'll just throw a couple of names out there who are a little more obscure right now.

the current Illinois State Treasurer Lisa Madigan is young, well-connected, popular and likely to run for governor in 2010. Given the state of the Illinois GOP, she has an excellent chance at winning, and if she does and gets reelected, as a relatively young, popular, attractive female governor of a large Midwestern state, she could very well be a presidential contender at some point.

On the Republican side, Rep. Bobby Jindal who will likely run for governor of Louisiana next year could be a strong possibility in 2016, or so. Also, former Rep. Anne Northup could be a contender if she wins the Kentucky governorship this year.

Chris Van Hollen of Maryland's another Democratic possibility.

Truth be told, though, it's very hard to make a prediction beyond the next six years. Neither George W. Bush nor Jimmy Carter were on anybody's radar eight years before they were elected. And Bill Clinton was only known to political junkies and ranked well below several others deemed future presidents such as Chuck Robb, Sam Nunn, Mario Cuomo and Bill Bradley. Hell, who would have predicted in 2003 that the 2008 Democratic nominee could very plausibly be a state senator named Barack Obama? (I'd actually heard of Obama by then, but I certainly didn't expect him, even if he won his senate race, to be a candidate for president by 2008.)

Realistic one:

Hillary Clinton (D), 2009-2012
Mike Huckabee (R), 2013-2016
Mike BeeBe (D), 2017-2025

4 Arkansas Presidents in 32 years? I think not.

Hillary wouldn't be an Arkansas President. She was born in Illinois, lived in Arkansas, moved to Washington, D.C., then carpetbagged to New York.

Even if you count her residence as first lady in DC and not Arkansas, she still lived in Arkansas for about half of her adult life.

Coleman is very vulnerable even in the senate, Jindal's too conservative. But that's just me.

I always find it mildly amusing how people seem to assume that three presidencies down the road, we'll still be tossing around the politicians we have today.

As I said earlier in this thread, why not put yourself in the shoes of somebody in 1967, and try and predict the next three presidents.  If you guessed: a Vice President who left office six years previously; the House Minority leader; and some hick state legislator from Georgia; you win a prize!

Of course, a whole bunch of other years could be picked and you'll find the same effect.

If someone had told me in 1997 that that new governor of Texas with no prior political experience whatsoever was going to beat Al Gore in 2000, I would have thought that that person was crazy.

See, things may have been different where you lived. Around my neighborhood in Ohio, it was all about George Bush...George Bush...the Governor of Texas and son of President Bush. By the time November 2000 came around though, my town leaned Gore.

My updated tongue-in-cheek predictions of the next 12 presidents (and for most, their vice presidents as well), including only people who are alive and well known today (completely unrealistic, I know, but the list gets more ridiculous as you go down it), and I think there's no one here who would be older than 73 (Bob Dole's age when he was the GOP nominee in '96) when they begin their *first* term:

09-13 Rudy Giuliani / Connie Mack
13-21 Barack Obama / Evan Bayh
21-29 Jim Nussle / David Vitter
29-33 David Vitter / John E. Sununu
33-37 Mark Pryor / Harold Ford Jr.
37-41 Bobby Jindal / Matt Blunt
41-45 Harold Ford Jr. / Stephanie Herseth
45-53 George P. Bush / Adam Putnam
53-61 Chelsea Clinton / Al Gore III   (yes, Chelsea becomes the first female president nearly a half century after her mother failed to do it)
61-69 Bridget McCain (not born in the U.S., but the Constitution's been changed by now) / Jack Roberts (son of the chief justice)
<at this point, I stop predicting VP's, only presidents>
69-77 Jack Roberts
77-85 Suri Cruise

There you go.  Suri Cruise will be elected president in 2076, and will serve two 4-year terms.

I always find it mildly amusing how people seem to assume that three presidencies down the road, we'll still be tossing around the politicians we have today.

Lets see what history has to say

PresidentThree terms previously
George W Bush(during Reagan)Failed House candidate; Oil tycoon; Son of sitting VP
Bill Clinton(during Carter)Attorney General, then Governor or Arkansas
George H W Bush(during Ford)Former US Representative; Former UN Ambassador; Ambassador to China; CIA director; considered for VP
Ronald Reagan(during Nixon)Former Actor; Governor of California
Jimmy Carter(during L Johnson)State Senator for Georgia; failed primary candidate for Governor
Gerald Ford(during Kennedy)US Representative for Michigan; House GOP conference chair
Richard Nixon(during Ike)Vice President of the United States
Lyndon Johnson(during Truman)US Representative, then US Senator from Texas
John F Kennedy(during FDR)only 13 when FDR became President; served in US Navy
Dwight Eisenhower(during Hoover) serving in US Army
Harry Truman(during Coolidge) County Court Judge in Missouri

Of the post-war Presidents, 6 were 'known' 3 Presidents previous, against 5 unknown.

Looking at the present Presidential candidates, during GHW Bush administration:

Hilary Clinton - First Lady of Arkansas, later First Lady elect of the United States
Barack Obama - Attending Harvard Law School
John Edwards - Lawyer
Al Gore - '88 Presidential candidate; US Senator for Tennessee
Bill Richardson - US Representative for New Mexico

John McCain - US Senator for Arizona
Mitt Romney - Private equity business
Rudy Guiliani - former US Attorney; failed candidate for NYC Mayor; Lawyer
Newt Gingrich - US Representative from Georgia; House Minority whip
Fred Thompson - Rear Admiral in US Navy, hunting for Red October.

Only 4 of these 10 would have been viewed as politicians in their own right.

I love how people are mentioning Pawlenty way down the road. Who will care about him more than 10 years from now?

Anyway, this is a stupid thread for what Gabu and Peter pointed out. In 1982 would anyone have picked the son of the Vice-President and the ex-Governor of Arkansas?
