"Hoping to minimize their vulnerability in the upcoming election cycle,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and NRSC Chairman John Ensign (Nev.) are privately making the rounds to urge GOP colleagues to run again in 2008 — and backing the request with promises of strong support from the party," reports Roll Call.

With Sen. Wayne Allard (R-CO) already announcing his retirement, "GOP leaders are keeping an eye on Senators who may opt to retire at the end of the Congress, such as Alexander and Sens. Thad Cochran (Miss.), John Warner (Va.), Elizabeth Dole (N.C.), Pete Domenici (N.M.) and Ted Stevens (Alaska),” though “Dole, Domenici and Stevens all have said they plan to run again."

Stevens will die in his seat.  Everything I've been reading in NM politics says that Domenici is has already actively started campaigning for re-election.

I can't speak towards the other three, since I know less about them.

Unless he happens to be up for reelection in the few months between his commitment to a nursing home and his death, in which case he could lose against a very strong opponent. Grin

I would applaud the retirements of Alexander and Dole.

I would applaud the retirements of Alexander and Dole.

Even if their seats were taken by Democrats?  Incidentally, I think both Alexander and Dole have said that they are running for re-election.

If their seats were guarenteed to be taken by Dems then I'd want them to stay on but that won't be the case. I'm pretty sure both are running but I can still hope.

Unless the Dem was a lot better.
