Since some native peoples object to having their names and other cultural heritage used by others, should the Land of Lincoln formally change its name, perhaps to the State of Lincoln?

So when are we going to do this to Connecticut, Massachusetts, and other states with Indian names?

With Illinois there's already an obvious name to change it to, so I decided to do the poll on that State, as it's the least silly State to so do.

I don't see why anyone would want this.  If anything, the Indians would be happy that we are using native names for places.

I remember a poll was taken of Native Americans in Washington with regards to the "Washington Redskins", probably the most offensive term relating to them in regular usage.  They overwhelmingly didn't care.

Somehow I doubt they care, therefore, about their name being honored as the name of a state.

Well yeah, I figure you got the 5-10% that's a vocal minority, and then the 90-95% that just don't really give a damn.

I'm pleasantly surprised at the response so far.  Of course neither Deano, BRTD, nor opebo have apparently bothered with it as of yet.

I agree.  All state names should be spelled phonetically.  I'm looking at you too Arkansas.  If you want to spell your name that way then start saying it that way Arkansassssssssssssssss.

I've seen older maps from the mid 1800s spelling it "Arkansaw."

Personally, I think that Sam Brownback should sue Arkansas for blatantly stealing his copyrighted title of "R-Kansas".

I've seen lots of kids in Redskins jackets on a Canadian reserve... that word seems more like a source of cockeyed pride than anything else. (And if Sherman Alexie's works are anything to go by, it is frequently used by Indians themselves to denote a full-blood, not wholly integrated guy, frequently abbreviated Skin. The opposite joking insult being Halfbreed, or Breed for short.)
Of course, it may be somewhat equivalent to n - a good word when used by a fellow Indian (to some people, at least, not necessarily to everybody), an insult when used by the Man and meant as an insult.

Anyways, if I'd go starting changing state names, I'd begin with the blatantly nonsensical ones: Indiana (not a particularly indian state), Wyoming (named for a valley in Pennsylvania), Idaho (a faux-indian word invented by some booster), Washington (named for a president who never dreamt of claiming the territory now named after him, and the only state named after a president).

several proposed states have taken their names from iconic presidents.  Lincoln and Jefferson are two that come immediately to mind
