We're open again.  One of TWO schools in the Detroit area!!!

You poor bastard!

Hey, my school did not close despite a snowstorm. And that storm was our worst as even the streets were covered with snow. There were 23 accidents in Denton that morning alone.

Even I almost got into an accident that day myself! I pulled away just in time, but lost control of my car and it hit the guardrail. Fortunately there was only minor damage and I was not hurt at all.

I am not used to driving in the snow at all, having only driven in it three times in my life. I can't wait until I can get somewhere where it doesn't snow!

You'd never survive up north. Here we don't fear snow so much...it's ice that causes the real problems.

Black ice especially, because you don't see it coming.

Our principal let us all wear coats

You're not allowed to wear coats normally?  that's odd.

Not in class--but in the halls and stuff-ya

Why wouldn't you be able to wear clothes anywhere?  Some females find some of the rooms too cold and put their coats on sometimes at my school. (wow, that's a horrible sentence in terms of structure)  It's very rare, but it happens.

Just because buses don't run doesn't mean that students could be subjected to below freezing temperatures for an extended period.  I can remember days where schools closed down across the county because a few school buildings could not heat the facility enough to counter the wind-chill outside.  As a result, to reduce the risk of children sub coming to the cold temperatures, they shut down the whole operation.  I would assume Private schools might look at what is going on at the public schools and make their own determination to follow their lead as well.

I know Prince William County is in a unique position out here.  Their county stretches from the DC metro area all the way out to the foothills.  If there is a blizzard out in the Western-end of the county but not the Eastern-end, they will shut down the entire school system for snow, even if half the county is dry.

10 C (50 F) is considered warm? Tongue

To people like me, from warm climes, yes, -3.4 is extremely cold! Even 10 is still cold!

Huh

No, 10 C is not considered warm. I don't see your point. "Warm" in Sweden would be maybe 25-30 C (77-86 F)

If you consider that warm why would -3.4F not be cold?

Because that's the kind of weather that makes you change your behaviour (removing clothes, going for swims, etc)

But a few minus degrees just means you have to put on a winter jacket. Now, 10 minus or 15 that's harsh. As long as you can survive naked for a considerable time it's not seriously cold. Tongue

Umm, you do realize that any wind speed over 5mph in -5F weather makes frostbite happen within 30 minutes on exposed skin, right? Tongue
