i remember this race well.  everyone thought petty was a lock, and was going to use the office as a stepping stone to run for governor in 2000.

yes, petty is an icon in nc.  but two things became very clear during the course of this campaign:

1.  he is an arrogant ass, despite his public 'aww shucks' persona.
2.  he isnt very smart.

as a result, nc voters voted for the person capable of dong the job.

i voted for elaine marshall as well.
