State Treasurers:

Bejamin Lacy served from 1901 to May 1929.
Edwin M. Gill served from May 1953 to 1977.
Harlan Boyles served from 1977 to 2001.

State Auditors:

Henry L. Bridges served from 1947 to 1981.

A. Craig Phillips was the Superintendant of Public Instruction from 1969 to 1989.

James R. Graham was Secretary of Agriculture from 1964 to 2000.

Thad A. Eure was Secretary of State from 1936 to 1989.

So in 1984, the state elections had Boyles elected to his 3rd term, Phillips elected to his 5th term, Graham elected to his 6th term, and Eure elected to his 13th term.

And Eure's last four elections were like this

1972: 72 years old, won 55%
1976: 76 years old, won 66%
1980: 80 years old, won 58%
1984: 84 years old, won 56%

jim graham was a good man, a very colorful person.

meg scott phipps followed him as sec of agriculture.  she is the daughter of former governor bob scott and granddaughter of former governor and us senator kerr scott.  she wound up in prison.

steve troxler is now sec of agriculture, if i remember correctly.  only the second republican elected to a nc council of state office.  sec of labor cherie berry was the first.

See that's just hopeful speculation, the senate seat held by Edwards was short lived

He was saying that the people holding that office have tended not to hold it for that long in recent history, not that Burr was going to lose in the next election.

He was saying that the people holding that office have tended not to hold it for that long in recent history, not that Burr was going to lose in the next election.

Here's the recent history of the seat:

Burr (2005-?) (R)
Edwards (1999-2005) (D)
Faircloth (1993-1999) (R)
Sanford (1986-1993) (D)
Broyhill (1986) (R)
East (1981-1986) (R)
Morgan (1975-1981) (D)
Erwin (1954-1974) (D)

The last time two people from the same party served after one another (with the exception of East's death and Broyhill's appointment) was when Morgan was elected in 1974.  I'd say this seat changes hands quite often.
