This is a battle between the Deep South and the Rocky Mountains, but ultimately I'd pick Mississippi.

Gore actually won a few mostly white counties in Alabama. Try to find such a thing in Mississippi.

How is Mississippi more conservative than Alabama?

It's a close race, but southern blacks tend to be slightly more socially conservative than southern whites on most things, and Mississippi is more black.

But, really, it depends on what issues you're looking at.

Out of that list Mississippi and Utah are the top two and I really can't decide between them. On the one hand Mississippi has virtually no social liberals, except Harry, at all as both the white and black population are staunchly conservative though to varying degrees.

Utah has some more liberal enclaves, Park City and the surrounding ski areas, some inner-city areas of Salt Lake City, but the Mormons themselves are very socially conservative, from the prohibitions on things like soft drinks to smoking bans to the more usual abortion and gay issues.

Very close in my mind.

MS whites voted higher for Bush than AL whites. Also, MS blacks voted higher for Bush than AL blacks. The only reason Bush did better in AL than MS was because MS has a higher black population.

As you say, it does vary issue to issue. But overall, I'd disagree with your first assertion, since southern blacks are more socially liberal than southern whites on issues like crime (esp. capital punishment) and civil liberties.

What issues were you thinking of, where southern blacks would be more socially conservative than southern whites?

Gay rights, probably abortion.  Issues that those who attend church frequently are especially likely to be conservative on.

And culture, too.

It's kind of hard to judge "social issues" anyway, since in the South, social issues are economic issues, in a way.

I'm surprised so many people are voting Idaho over Utah, or even Wyoming...

How is Mississippi more conservative than Alabama?

Both are very racially polarized. Now:
Bush did better with MS whites than AL whites.
Bush did better with MS blacks than AL blacks.

Rocky Mountains are socially conservative, but not nearly as much as the deep south.  (I think +2 to +8.5 on the scale is a good comparison).

Texas isn't really that socially conservative at all... its just very Republican.  The Mountain states are more libertarian conservative.  Mississippi, Alabama and South Carolina are the best bets.

I'd say Utah because there they are planning on passing a law saying you can be charged with a crime for looking at porn on school computers.

South Carolina, followed by Mississippi.

But you forgot Indiana.  Don't be fooled by the recent election.  Even our Democrats, here, are Republicans.  :-)

Yes, Mormans are socially conservative, but Utah does have liberal pockets and has a unique history of mostly being founded by members of one religious group.  It's not entirely comparable to other states.

Mississippi would get my #1 vote followed somewhere behind the rest of the south and Indiana thrown in between the south and the plains.

Utah, although some areas are not extremely conservative. Otherwise, Mississippi and other Southern states follow closely behind.

Texas isn't really that socially conservative at all

hahahahahaha. Yeah, I'm sure most Texans are fine with abortion and hold enlightened views on gays (which is why Texas didn't fight to defend its sodomy law or anything). And the Religious Right and the Southern Baptists aren't very strong in Texas either.

I chose Mississippi.  On my list, Alabama is second, followed by Wyoming, Utah (minus Salt Lake City), Kansas (minus the Topeka and Kansas City areas, Wichita is pretty conservative), Oklahoma (minus Tulsa, McAlester, Sallisaw, and Idabel), Texas (minus Austin), South Carolina, maybe Kentucky (minus Louisville),

Would it be accurate to say that Mississippi is the most traditionally conservative and Utah is the most politically right-wing?

I wouldn't say that Southern black are more conservative than Southern Whites.  Southern blacks do tend to be somewhat conservative on social issues, but vote Democratic in large numbers because they are quite liberal on economic issues.
