New Election: 2006 Alabama Gubernatorial Republican Primary Election Results

Not as much of an ass-stomping as 2002's Republican primary where Riley squashed the Lt. Governor and a Governor's son. But still.. Riley just smushed Moore big time here.

Weirdly enough, there doesn't appear to be a lot of crossover of support from Fob James in the 1998 runoff to Roy Moore.

Although 1998's surge in voter turnout for the runoff (due to laws allowing people who voted in the Democratic primary to vote in the Republican runoff) was probably a sign that had this race had a runoff, there would have been a surge.

Votes cast in the first primary and the runoff

Clarke: 688 in the first primary, 3130 in the runoff
Greene: 33 in the first primary, 820 in the runoff
Washington: 208 in the first primary, 1681 in the runoff.

Despite media reports, the surges in the black belt probably benefited James. Maybe enough people realized that James would lose to Siegelman.

I remember originally Roy Moore was seen as a real threat to Rob Riley.  In fact, at one stage Riley was equally in danger of losing the Primary and the general election.  Lucy Baxley was not a bad candidate after all, but post-Katrina Riley's approval ratings recovered and he is now doing very well with a 64%-35% approval rating I think.

In the scheme of things, I guess people just didn't do their homework on what parts of Alabama actually vote in Republican primaries.

Riley squashing a statewide office holder in the 2002 primary should be a sign of how formidable he really is

And when Shelby retires in 2010, Riley will likely win election to the Senate.

66.66% to 33.34%?

I don't think I've ever seen a result so nicely divided up into fractions like that.
