Jacquelyn Morrow Lewis Ledgerwood ran for the Senate in Oklahoma in 1998. She died before the first primary, where she got 21% and finished second. Good enough to make the runoff.

But the first place candidate did win every county while getting 46%

But since Ledgerwood was dead, she didn't make much progress in the runoff and she lost 75/25.

So, in conclusion, it's hard to win a runoff election if you have to make up lots of ground, and if you are dead.

And a few quotes from this story

Actually, while Mel Carnahan was deceased, his record as Governor made him a better candidate than John Ashcroft.

As the buttons said after his death, "I'm still with Mel"
