I never knew Manny survived until well into 1986! He was 101 when he died, after being enobled in 1970 and kept writing books well into his 90's. There is a movement to have a statue erected in George Square, Glasgow which is what brought him into my mind.

He was apparently the longest living British politician and peer when he died. Has that record been broken?

Yeah, he had a good innings. Not sure whether anyone's last longer.

Funny that both candidates in Seaham '35 were Scots.

Strom Thurmond was in politics longer. Didn't he vote for secession in 1860?
