This might be stepping on toes, but then again, this is just a total whooping.

It was considered an amazing victory at the time and Hutchison has never ran as well for re-election.

Has any incumbent Senator ever suffered as large a defeat as Kreuger, ever? He was only an appointed incumbent, but still, any incumbent losing by better than 2-1 is pretty amazing.

I'd be curious to see a historic al list of any other Senate or House or Governor races in which an incumbent lost this badly (2-1 or more).

Krueger was no Lloyd Bentsen.

The special election was at the time of the Robin Hood elections in May which may have drawn a few more voters, though total turnout was only 1/3 of the presidential election.

The runoff was on June 6, the Saturday after Memorial Day.  KBH received a total of votes equal to the 3 top GOP candidates (593K+284K+277K => 1188K) from the special election.  Krueger didn't get as many votes as he did a month early, plus gaining none of the top 2 Democrats support (593+166+52 => 576K).

In the all party primary in May, Hutchison and Krueger both got 29% of the vote while Republican Congressmen Joe Barton and Jack Fields both got 14%.  At this time 73% of Texans disapproved of Bill Clinton.

The region around San Antonio for Fields is interesting.  It's not even a strong GOP area.  Otherwise Fields and Barton were basically limited to their congressional district, though Fields carried a much larger part of the Houston area where his district was (north Harris and Montgomery).

I don't know, but I do remember that the Republicans had a special hatred for Krueger after he introduced federal anti-stalking legislation. (They said it should be left up to the states, though they always opposed it at the state level too.) Later, however, Hutchison tried taking credit for Krueger's idea, once they realized what a popular idea it was.

I also remember the time around 1998 when Hutchison was heard making racist comments during a visit to her former high school.

Really?  I always thought Hutchison was a good Republican - one of a few in the Senate like John Warner and Kit Bond.

Rhode Island Gubernatorial in 1990.  The incumbent Republican got 26%.
