"He gave the keynote speech at the 1964 Republican National Convention in San Francisco that nominated Barry Goldwater. Hatfield denounced the extreme conservatism that Goldwater and his supporters were associated with."

That sort of says all about why Goldwater lost as badly as he did... if the second sentence is meant as a synopsis of the speech, that is. It's a little ambiguous.

He had to be more partisan back then. Who knows. I doubt Lincoln Chafee voted for Bush in 2000 either (he openly admitted he didn't in 2004, but it's not like anyone expected him to)

well chafee has proven himself to be a son of a bitch.

i used to have high regard for the man.  but his constant whining after losing is getting more than obnoxious.  the bush white house and the republican party helped him out as best they could.

'Odom'.  That's an interesting middle name.

My opinion is positive, by the way.

And you said you'd leave the Republican Party if he lost the primary.

yes.

that is the whole point.

a lot of republicans stuck by him.  yet he chooses to bash the party once he loses.

It's a shame you noticed that so late.

Oh come on lets be real here.  The only reason the GOP stuck by him is because they knew Laffey had no chance in hell, and realized that the balance of power may come down to one seat (which it did).  I know that, you know that he knows that and the GOP knows that.  They didn't open up to him to be nice, or helped him because they wanted to, they did so because they had to and knew if they didn't it may have cost them the Senate.  You and I both know, as well as Chafee and the GOP, that good way they were treating him would have ended as soon as the Election was over.
