I'm not really sure I'd call Coleman a "moderate"...

he certainly is more moderate than most republican senators.



Only because he is facing re-election in a Presidential year that voted for the Democratic Party's nominee in every election since 1972.

The last time we voted for a Republican for president in a non-landslide was 1916. 

Minnesota figured out that the Republican party was no longer the party of Lincoln in about October of 1929.
