In the mood for unplausibility, total weirdness, and crazy timelines?

I am.

2006

Republicans keep control of the Senate and the House by a whisker.

2008

In 2007, President Bush invades Iran, while keeping troops in Iraq. The Iran War becomes a second Vietnam, with high casualties and staunch resistance from Shia insurgents and the Iranian regular troops. The Democrats have been unable to put a stop to the war and many people have enough of the war. Many Democrats and moderate Republicans, as well as important Republicans such as Giuliani and McCain join the new Populist Party, led by Maryland Senator Michael Freeman (invented), former Democrat. Freeman wins the Populist primaries without any sizable opposition and rallies a strong opposition to the war.

Election Night is closer than expected. Freeman wins by a whisker in California, allowing him to win the required 270 electoral votes.

2010:

In mid-term elections, the Populists reaffirm their control of both houses, winning 22 of the 34 races in Senatorial elections.

2012:

After the 2008 debacle for the conservative Republicans to the centrist Populists, who had already stolen many moderate Republicans and Democrats, the Republicans moved towards the center, and changed its name to the Progressive Republican Party. Vice President McCain joined the PR Party, leaving the Populists.

In 2012, the Progressive Republicans nominate Mike Huckabee of Arkansas. Incumbent President Mike Freeman gains the Populist nomination. The remaining Democrats decided to run a l ticket of Dennis Kucinich. However, mainstream Democrats side with Freeman.

The campaign is mostly played between the center-right Progressive Republicans and the center-left Populists. Freeman gains re-election with a large margin of victory.

2014:

In mid-term elections, the Progressive Republicans win control of the Senate by winning 18 of the 34 Senate races. The Populists retain the House by a severely reduced majority.

2016:

The last years of the Freeman Presidency were marked by an economic downturn and unpopularity of the government's foreign policy, especially in the Balkans and the Koreas. The Progressive Republicans nominated Duncan Hunter of California, while the Populists nominated James Webb of Virginia. The remaining Democrats slided down to third-party status and ran Dennis Kucinich again. The Progressive Republicans won the election in a near-landslide and retained the Senate. The Populists retained the House.

2018:

American military intervention in the Balkan conflict in 2017 proved to be unpopular. The economy continued into a recession and unemployment rose gradually. As a result, the Progressive Republicans lost the Senate to the Populists.

2020:

As the war in the Balkans continued and American peacekeeperrs remained on the ground, the Presidency of Duncan Hunter lost popular support. The Populists, eager to retake the White House after retaking Capitol Hill in 2018 nominated Barack Obama, by now an experienced Illinois Populist Senator. By 2020, the Democrats had splintered into various groups or had integrated the Populist Party.

Barack Obama was elected over Duncan Hunter with a commendable majority.

2022

Angered by what they call the "leftist push of the Progressive Republicans", conservative members of the party split, some joining the Constitution Party, others forming the American National Party (ANP). The ANP is conservative with isolationist, anti-immigration policies, and support of many acts of the Bush presidency, including the Patriot Act. In mid-term elections, the Populists loose a few House seats but retains control of both houses. The Progressive Republicans are plagued by the party split.

2024

The Populist incumbent, the popular President Obama, is nominated for a second term, while the Progressive Republicans, now renamed the Progressives, nominate newcomer Bill Fryson. (NOTE- As of now, most candidates and names will be fictional due to the date of action). The ANP nominates, along with the Constitution, George Allen of Virginia.

Obama wins in a near-landslide

ANP is shown in red, Progressive in blue, Populists in green

2026:

The Populists loose the Senate to the Progressives while the ANP gains its first Senate seats. The House remains Populist, who loose only a few seats.

2028

The Progressives have recovered from their split, while the Populist Presidency is becoming more and more unpopular. President Obama's policy dealing with the Balkan situation is unpopular and the economy is taking another nose dive. The Progressives promise "another foreign view", "a new economic revival" and "progress for once" under Bill Fryson. The Populists nominate Matt Coleman of Iowa, while Allen runs again for the ANP.

Fryson wins a huge EV victory and a considerable majority in the popular vote.
