1972 Presidential Election

Republican Nomination

Riding on peace and prosperity, President Richard Nixon wins the 1972 GOP nomination after facing challenges from Congressmen, Pete McCloskey (California) and John Ashbrook (Ohio). At the convention, President Nixon decides to replace Vice President Sprio T. Agmew with former Democratic Governor of Texas, John Connally.

Democratic Nomination

With one of the most crowded fields in presidential primary history, conservative Senator Henry "Scoop" Jackson of Washington surprises everyone by winning the Democratic nomination. After Governor Wallace's assassination attempt, Senator Jackson managed to capitalise on Wallace's exit from the presidential race and pick up most of the conservative vote. Senator Jackson's win in the California primary over former Vice President Hubert Humphrey and Senator George McGovern sealed the Democratic nomination. At the convention, Senator Jackson picked Indiana Senator Birch Bayh to be his running mate.

American Independent Liberal Party

After another lost bid for the Democratic nomination, former Minnesota Senator Eugene McCarthy announces the formation of a new liberal party in the United States. Despite calls for McCarthy to disband his party in order for Democratic unity, Senator McCarthy refuses. Former Senator McCarthy then calls for Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm to be his running mate. The congresswoman accepts, and the McCarthy candidacy is up and running.

The Final Weeks

After gaining massive ground from the Jewish-American voter, Democratic nominee Henry 'Scoop' Jackson set his sights on attacking the Nixon Administration on foreign policy. Especially on detente with the Soviet Union. Senator Jackson calls the reason for the ending of the Vietnam War purely political. Only the end it so the President can win re-election. Now with full Democratic unity behind him, the ticket of Jackson/Bayh makes some gains in the polls.

Eugene McCarthy's candidacy has brought a significant amount of liberals to his campaign, due to the moderate-to-conservative Henry 'Scoop' Jackson being nominated. Former Senator McCarthy also joins in the political attacking of both Senator Jackson and President Nixon. McCarthy calling them both warmongers. McCarthy's foreign policy includes, ceasing relations with Israel, the full withdrawl of every American troops across the World and a full nuclear disarmament. Former Senator McCarthy also announces if he was elected President of the United States, he would create a full employment skeme and to shorten the work week. And he would abolish the Electoral College.

Jackson/Bayh:           42%

Will the Jackson/Bayh ticket be able to take the White House in 1972?

To everyone who has supported me with my electoral series, I am sorry I haven't updated it through to the 1972 Presidential Election. But, I will update this TL sometime this week. I've just been having a alternative history memory lapse, even with my Quentin Roosevelt Survives WWI TL on othertimelines. Hope you understand, RR.
