As a Hispanic from the West, he represents an increasingly important part of the Dem coalition.

No, no, this is incorrect.  The current Senator is Pete Coors; Salazar was done.

I doubt that, he ran as a moderate and has basically voted as a liberal.

Not too bad, I used to live in Colorado and Coors lost because we all knew he was a dope and Republicans weren't excited about him.

He was one of the few bright spots for the Dems in the November 2004 elections (well, so was Obama, but that race was decided well before Election Day). Anyway, Salazar's certainly not the most liberal senator, but seems like a decent person. As memphis said, he's the type of Dem likely to succeed in most of the Rocky Mountain states.

Agreed.

Small tangent: the only amusement in that race was provided by National Review hack John J. Miller, who said that some comment of Salazar's would alienate voters in the "barrios." Aside from the unintentional humor of some rich Anglo pretending to know what people in the "barrios" think, he was dead wrong. But what can you expect out of that rag? Quite a few of NR's "election experts" were predicting victories for Santorum and Steele on election eve last year.

Actually he voted against Alito. The only Democrats to vote for Alito were Conrad, Johnson, Byrd, and Ben Nelson.

I doubt that, he ran as a moderate and has basically voted as a liberal.

He hasn't voted like a moderate. He voted for torture and to confirm right wing nutjob William Pryor (the only other Democrat who did was Ben Nelson). He also endorsed a third party candidate over the Democratic nominee in the Connecticut Senate race last year.

You can pick out a few votes here and there, but overall he has voted lockstep with the Democrats.

Not my favorite Democrat but a man worth listening to and consulting about national policy.

I view him as moderate, but not as conservative as Ben Nelson.

Met him a few times at Fort Carson - great guy.

Very supportive of the troops.

A lot better than Coors. Colorado picked the right guy in 04.

That makes two of us, I find it very interesting the bile that bubbles up in people like BRTD when they're confronted with a Democrat who isn't insane like them.

If you and I, two conservatives can see past party and realize Salazar wasa good character man and a leader, despite his politics, why can't most liberals?
