I found it on wiki, and in one other place on the net-that the first Libertarian presidential candidate endorsed Bush in 2004.  I'd be very interested if someone had link to an article explaining why that was-if a reason was given out.

I don't have a specific answer to this question, but one must remember that social issues overall were much less prominent in 1972 than they are today. People who were calling themselves Libertarians at that time were probably just more extreme versions of Republicans in many aspects, especially when you consider that Nixon was not really economically conservative even for his day.
