You either love Richard Nixon or hate the man's guts. Discuss you views on Richard Milhous Nixon, the 37th President and I might tell you mine.

"Richard Nixon has never been one of my favorite people anyway. For years I've regarded his existence as a monument to all the rancid genes and broken chromosomes that corrupt the possibilities of the American Dream; he was a foul caricature of himself, a man with no soul, no inner convictions, with the integrity of a hyena and the style of a poison toad. The Nixon I remembered was absolutely humorless; I couldn't imagine him laughing at anything except maybe a paraplegic who wanted to vote Democratic but couldn't quite reach the lever on the voting machine. "

Hunter S. Thompson knew all there was to know about Richard Nixon.

A man who could have been one of America's most respected historical figures but whose own lack of self confidence and stupidity destroyed himself.

As he said "Those who hate you don't win unless you hate them, and then you destroy yourself." He destroyed himself. I have little respect for his economic policies, except for opening up communications with China, which means overall there is little good I can say about him overall. He is a monument of how one can destroy him/herself and we can learn a lot from him in that.

In a few years I'll say what I think of Mr. Thompson but I won't say what I think since he died in the last year or so. Either way my he rest in peace

Obvious pros and cons to Nixon. Very moderate, solid leader. Though, also a crook and a liar.

Replace Nixon with LBJ and you have pretty much the same thing.

Nixon was evil but sane.  Dubya makes him look like a god.

There's a lot of things that Nixon was, not all of them bad, but "sane" is one of the LAST adjectives that comes to mind when describing Nixon.

The sad thing is, I agree with you on that.

The only Republican in my lifetime I'd have supported with any certainty - and then only in 1972

Did you forget about Watergate? Of course, even McGovern says that Bush is worse than Nixon.

The Presidency needed the power expansions so it could deal with the... recaltitrant south. No matter how much you neoconfederates whine remember that northern "opression" has been FAR lighter than any other secessionitic section in any other nation.
