Why did Breckinridge do so well in Pennsylvania?  Did the Northern Dems in Pennsylvania dislike Douglas that much or something?  is that why?  or no?

Probably machine politics, ie the Dem machine in PA endorsing Breckinridge. Possibly to do with Breckinridge being Buchanan's VP, and Buchanan being from PA.

Breckenridge did so well in Pennsylvania due to "Incomplete Fusion" of the two (Northern and Southern) Democratic tickets.

If I recall correctly the "Fusion" ticket had 14 Breckenridge electors and 13 Douglas electors.  Because the state party was controlled by James Buchanan and because Breckenridge was his Vice-President is the reason that the Fusion ticket backed Breckenridge.   This was the ticket that got party support and the huge majority of Democratic votes.

Now there was another ticket that got a couple of percentage points that was a 'Straight Douglas' ticket containing the names of the 13 Douglas electors on the Fusion ticket and 14 other names of indiciduals who were pledged to Douglas.  That ticket got almost all of its support in the Philadelphia area becaus one of the daily newspapers there endorsed it over the fusion Breckenridge/Douglas ticket.

I hope this straightens matters out a little bit.
