What do you think of these 'improved' avatars?

One thing I've always liked about this forum is the way we can identify our affiliation and location with a nifty little graphic. Several months ago I was happy to help satisfy those who affiliate with the Constitution and Green parties by creating the entire batch of them, based on the original avatars (for consistency). I found it quite hypnotically stimulating.
I was thinking perhaps the whole batch could possibly use a little 'modernization'. I've been exceptionally bored today, so I thought I'd play around with Photoshop and see what I could come up with.
Using Alabama (the first alphabetical state) as a prototype, this is what I eventually made:
What do you think?

Because you created ugly avatars to go instead of our beautiful new ones. If you are bored, start a new round of risk games instead.

Maybe try them without the border. I don't think it fits.

Also, maybe try a different font; that one looks rather plain and ordinary when put beside the fancy coloring.

I like the avatars we have so it's not like I don't like the new ones but I don't want to change the ones we have.

better yet-how about an option for 'new' and 'classic' avatars?

At some point I'll adjust the prototypes based on the suggestions here, but I'm actually kinda busy lately.

This might be something Dave could answer. Would it be possible to view a certain set of avatars for everybody, depending on which ones you personally prefer?

That would depend on how much of the message board software was available to Dave, but if he can edit the stuff that actually outputs the HTML itself, that would be a trivial matter.

I don't like them because I like how the current avatars look. The current avatars look like they're from the map. Those are getting a little too complex and less atlasy.

I like the idea of people choosing which one they could have - but I also agree about the borders.

I prefer the current avatars. Those ones might be improved by either removing the border or maybe going with black as the border color.
