Well I just been playing around for a few days... and made my own states... and this is what i came out with.... PS the little black dot in West Carolina is where i live....

The west half of Minnesota should be part of Dakota, the eastern half should be part of Wisconsin.

If I were doing this, I would start with economic/media market/agricultural regions and geographic features.

Well I took the 2000 county map and put as many democrat counties  or republican counties in the states..

Did you know Iowa and Missouri almost went to war in 1846? This map kind of remoinds me of waht could have been the Iowa-Missouri Border War of 1846.

Missouri clamied all of southern Iowa, Iowa told Missouri to get out. The Iowa Militia was ready to attack the Missouri Militia in southern Iowa when President Polk passed a decree saying Iowa had claim to Southern Iowa.

Heh.  The precursor to the precursor to the Civil War.

Nine years later, Missorians flooded into Kansas and went to war with themselves.

I don't know, Josh, seems like a rather flimsy basis for creating states. After all, these things can change rather quickly. Wouldn't economic, social, and geographic realities be a more solid ground for drawing state lines?

Not that our actual state lines are based on anything logical -- rivers and straight lines. Hmm. Not much thought put into that.

Michaelmoorica, ha ha. It'd make more sense to keep that part of Michigan though, without it that Michigan would be pretty Republican.

I'd also attach Bayland to NoCal. NoCal would be Republican under that map, but if Bayland was attached, it'd be heavily Democratic, since the current areas in NoCal are sparsley populated and would be heavily outvoted.

Also, I'd take Las Vegas away from Basinica and add it to Arizona, and attach the southern part of NM to Texahoma. Eastern Washington would be added to Basinica too.

Flyoverica currently includes Kansas City. That should be attached to Missouri. Soutwest Missouri and Northwest Arkansas should be attached to Texahoma. That would make both Missouri and Arkansas safely Democratic.

Other than that, pretty decent gerrymander. I always thought I would add El Paso to NM in any state gerrymander, but your idea might be better.
