After the Civil War, southerners who stayed in the South and joined the party of Lincoln were know as "Black Republicans".  One prominant southern general became widely reviled for becoming one of these "Black Republicans".  He late in life, he became the successful President of a railroad.  Who was this general?

I don't know which to accept.  Ernest's is more explanitory.  If I didn't know the answer, I would have to ask PB for a follow up.  Ummmmmmmmmmmmm.  I'm going to go with Ernest, sorry PB, nothing personal.

Point for Ernest.
