I doubt it's always voted for the Democrats.  Teddy Roosevelt won Wayne County with 69.38% of the vote in 1904 - there's no way in hell that was done without winning Detroit.

I think it's evident just looking at results from Wayne County, and considering that Detroit is more Democratic than Wayne County at large, that the Democrats have indeed won Detroit a whole lot.

Does anyone remember 9iron? I remember him making a huge deal about finding sometime in history that the city of Detroit went for a Republican. So I guess it's happened at least once.

Years ago, Wayne county  was very much like the east coast.  Lots of wealthy people from the era of the industrial revolution who controlled a population of imigrants who largely did not vote.  This combined with the fact that the republican party of yesterday was a more liberal/libertarian party, lent MI to be a solidly republican state.  It was also republican because the South was Dem - that sounds simplistic, but true.

Hard to believe now, but the Republicans used to be the high tariff party. This got them support from all the Industrial areas that are now Rust Belt unionized Dems.

Wayne County, 1924

Coolidge (R) 80 percent
LaFollette (P) 12 percent
Davis (D) 7 percent

... yeah, the Democrats have lost Detroit in the past.

Wayne County,1912:

Roosevelt 39%
Taft 30%
Wilson 26%
Debs 4%

Would the Dems have done anything here?  jw.
