April 16, 2007

Victoria Wulsin, whose effort to unseat Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-Ohio) fell short by fewer than 3,000 votes last year, announced Monday she would challenge the second-term GOP lawmaker again in 2008.

“When Americans are fighting in Iraq, going without affordable healthcare and struggling to support their families, we need an independent voice in Congress, not a rubber-stamp for special interests and the Bush administration,” Wulsin said.

Though her district is solidly Republican, Schmidt has struggled in her two campaigns, and Democrats and Republicans alike believe she is vulnerable again in 2008.

Wulsin is a doctor who nearly added to the Democratic gains in 2006.

She pledged to bring “integrity” back to the district.

“The people of the Second District deserve a Congresswoman who will be honest with her constituents,” Wulsin said.

I hope Schmidt wins. The seat will never be truly safe with her in it, forcing the GOP to constantly waste money there. But if a Democrat wins, they might as well just get "one termer" stamped on their forehead and the seat will go back to being safe GOP.

The NRCC would be wise to just throw Schmidt to the dogs. And try to primary her.

I was amazed that Wulsin managed to improve on Paul Hackett's performance. She's got a great platform; I hope she wins this time and gets Mean Jean out of Congress for good.

We were too stupid to pass up that opportunity in 2006 and it'll probably be the same next year.

She lost just once.

After research it turns out it's twice, sort of; she lost in 2005 by failing to make the top 2 in the special election primary and of course fell short in '06.

Wulsin won't win.  She really isn't all that liberal but she is still left enough to be too left for OH-2.  Schmidt is truly reviled in Southwest Ohio and last year was horrible for the Ohio GOP and yet Wulsin still couldn't pull through.  That is a testament to both the GOP's gerrymandering and the enormous amount of GOP support in Southwest Ohio.  Even without the gerrymandering it is likely Schmidt would still be in office as Steve Chabot's neighboring district would likely become more left leaning rather than Schmidt's.  Paul Hackett is probably the only Democrat in the state who could win in OH-2 and he might even be able to hold the seat for more than one term.  Unfortunately the idiots who run the Ohio Democratic Party effectively chased him away from politics for a while after they insisted that Sherrod Brown be their nominee for US Senate.

The Republicans really just need to wake up down there and unite behind a single primary opponent.  I'm sick of having this embarrassment to the state of Ohio in Congress and without Hackett the Democrats don't have a realistic shot at beating her unless she eats a kitten or something.  So wake up Ohio GOP and boot this bitch!  I expect some action here Naso!

If Democrats end up controlling redistricting or having a good say in it in 2011, they will likely make either OH-01 or OH-02 a Dem district by clumping all of the Republican areas into a single district.

Ohio is the shining GOP achievement in the art of gerrymandering.  The fact that Democrats were able to beat more Republican incumbents in Texas than in Ohio, especially considering Coingate is stunning.

More like clumping all the Democrats into one district.  The only non-Republican area in Southwest Ohio is the actual city of Cincinnati.  If OH-1 contained the entire city then it would be a Dem district but both districts that border it would easily remain Republican no matter what you did.

OH-01 already leans Democratic, but still elects Steve Chabot.  What Dems would likely do is leave OH-01 as it is and just wait until Chabot retires or draw his home into another district.

Then they would take Warren county out of OH-02, which gave Schmidt her victory twice while stringing together all of the few Democratic precincts in Butler county and putting them in OH-02.  This would make OH-02 a district that a Democrat could win and hold.
