How much more lopsided/ closer do you think the 1980 race would have been if only Reagan and Carter had run without Anderson in the mix at all.

It's very hard to determine.  Anderson was just another person to attack Carter.  As soon as Anderson entered the race, Carter went from about 60% in the polls to less than 50%.  If Anderson wasn't in the race, the whole dynamic would've changed.  Remember that Carter was actually leading the polls most of the campaign.  In the end, I think it would have been pretty close, possibly something like this:

Yeah, but he was a social liberal. AFAIK he advocated the legalisation or decriminalisation of cannabis.

Yeah, but he was a social liberal. AFAIK he advocated the legalisation or decriminalisation of cannabis.

He also wanted to raise the gas tax fifty cents.  If we only people had listened. . .
