New Election: 2006 South Dakota Referendum General Election Results

This is probably the least popular amendment i've ever seen. And that includes legislator pay raise requests, and LaRouche-supported anti-AIDS amendments.

Granted, the explanation included the sentence "If approved, the proposed amendment will likely be challenged in court and may be declared to be in violation of the US Constitution.  If so, the State may be required to pay attorneys fees and costs", which is incredibly slanted.

If I recall, the amendment got fewer votes than petition signatures.

Why did this do so well among Native Americans, especially poor areas?  It looks like they only rejected it about 60-40.

Either they

a) distrust the establishment
b) distrust judges

or

the vote was rigged in every other county. Wink

Tell me, why did South Dakota bother holding a referendum on something so wildly unpopular?

I have a feeling that SD is a pro-life state and that it was simply badly worded

The referendum RBH is citing here has nothing to do with abortion. The abortion amendment, while it failed, didn't fail as miserably as the above amendment.

The only reason anyone ever talks about "impeaching judges" is in order to get rid of judges who rule to allow abortions.

A higher percentage of people voted to raise gas taxes in Oklahoma in September 2005 (just right after the gas price spike after Katrina) than voted for JAIL.

What a big baby.

Their side lost. They need to get over it and stop being a bunch of sore losers.
