I think he has it right when he said in his own email that he doubted it would of much interest to anyone except his friends.

How true.

Intrigued by the fact that he was a presidential candidate and I'd never heard of him, I dug a little deeper.  It turns out that the year he chose to run for the Republican presidential nomination was... (drum roll)... 1972.  Wait, 1972?!  Uh, I guess it must have seemed like a good idea at the time.

He ran against Nixon for being too pro-war and endorsed John Kerry in 2004.  I shouldn't think this news will be a surprise to too many people.

Hardly; Pombo was going down anyway.

haha, I know who this guy is from the film All the Presidents Men (1976). They show archive footage of the 1972 Republican National Convention. Apparently, McCloskey eceived one delegate vote for the nomination.

At first I thought this meant a republican presidential nominee.  I was shocked to find that Bob Dole had switched parties.

McCloskeys have been Republicans in California since 1859, the year before Lincoln's election. My great grandfather, John Henry McCloskey, orphaned in the great Irish potato famine of 1843, came to California in 1853 as a boy of 16, and joined the party just before the Civil War.

The Irish Potato Famine didn't start till 1845. Maybe his Great Grandfather was orphaned due to natural causes (childbirth, disease, etc.)

Well, in fairness the Dems have been quite a bit better in recent years than the GOP on all of those counts, although obviously that may be partly attributable to their relative lack of power until this year as well.

Good post.

McCloskey always did have a little problem with facts.
