Previously it seemed that Bruning, the Nebraska AG, would only run if Hagel retired.  Now he's saying he'll run either way.

Democrats mentioned in the article are Omaha mayor Mike Fahey, and former Senator Bob Kerrey, although neither sound too interested.

I couldn't imagine Kerrey running there now. I'm sure he is still popular with the people of Nebraska, but I don't think he is popular enough to be elected.

Also since he lives in New York, there might be a problem with residency.

Well Bruning has launched an exploratory committee and a website http://www.jonbruning.com/ - I think he is obviously going to run; hopefully Hagel will make his mind up now.

More news:

Kerrey Was Behind Poll

Former Sen. Bob Kerrey (D-NE) "recently tested the waters for a possible U.S. Senate bid, but he said Thursday evening that there was only a 1 percent chance that he would run again -- and only if GOP Sen. Chuck Hagel didn't run for re-election next year," the Omaha World-Herald reports.

"Kerrey asked his longtime political adviser, Paul Johnson, to gauge public opinion on him. That led to Democratic pollster Harrison Hickman's sampling Nebraskans' views with some telephone calls. Hickman didn't conduct a full-fledged poll."

Said Kerrey: "I'm 99 percent certain I'm not going to do this."

Apparently some Nebraska blogs have uncovered some interesting writings from Bruning that may undermine his attempt to primary Hagel from the right.

Also, keep in mind, that Gov. Heineman is Hagel's man and that Bruning endorsed Osborne in the primary.

A Hagel-Bruning primary will pull the Nebraska GOP apart.

Ouch. Well, it was quite some time ago but that will be used by the Hagel campaign (if he even runs) and it will hurt Bruning.
