I'm going to ask members of the forum who they would have voted for in a particular presidential primary year, then who ever gets the most votes in a week is the nominee. Then next week I'll ask you who do you want the particular parties running mate to be. Then once that's finished I'll ask who do you want to win out of the Republican and Democratic candidates. Hope you will enjoy this. Rockefeller Republican! Let the primaries begin!

Looking at the results now, it looks like either Al Gore or Paul Simon will get the '88 Democratic nomination. But, all that can change.

Well, had I not been only a few months old, and voting age, I still would've supported Simon.

Dukakis or Hart, voted Dukakis in the poll.  People are forgetting that Gore wasn't as cool back then.

In the real '88 campaign, I initially supported Bruce Babbitt, but by the time our state's primary came around, he was already out of the race, so I voted for Dukakis. My second choice would have been Paul Simon, but I thought at the time that Dukakis would make a better candidate (boy, was I ever wrong).

Al Gore was not the same person in '88 as he is now. He ran to the right that year (which is funny now, considering how some right-wingers consider him the epitome of liberalism) and cozied up to Ed Koch and some others who did him more harm than good. His strategy in '88 was interesting: he skipped Iowa and New Hampshire and concentrated on the southern states that came later. It might have worked-- he won quite a few southern primaries-- had he been able to pick off some of the big states, like New York (he foolishly counted on Kock to help him there). Of course, such a strategy would be impossible nowadays.

At the time Dukakis, in retrospect Gore.
