My uncle was a Republican and a Vietnam veteran... He died in September before the Bush-Gore election, but let it known that he didn't like Bush, and wouldn't vote for him... He had a strong dislike for Clinton because he avoided the draft... That's often how he voted... Gore went to Nam, and Bush didn't... Ergo, a vote for Gore... He probably would've voted Kerry too...

McGovern OWNS Cheney.  You know, Dick Cheney can certainly comment all he wants about the Iraq War but he really should keep his mouth shut when it comes to Vietnam.

I agree. I think it's hilarious that despite this Nixon felt the need to spy for the election and ironically orchestrated his own downfall as a result.

Like Harry Reid just said - why waste time trading jabs with a person that has a 9% approval rating.

Funny, since 1972 every Democratic Presidential candidate except Bill Clinton actually saw combat.  The same is true about every Republican Presidential candidate since '72 excluding Ronald Reagan and George W Bush.

And yet these 3 were the only ones to be elected to 2 terms.  Guess that is one of those little ironies of life.

I agree with both but the latter is actually a bit sad, too.

Yeah, cuz, ya know... it wasn't like the original candidate died in an airplane crash a week before the election or anything.

And that means that they have to pick Walter Mondale of all people to run for the seat?

Well, think about it from their standpoint... Mondale still won Minnesota in 84... He was a multiple term Senator... And Hubert Humphrey has been unavailable since January of 78.

Yep.  I read that.  McGovern comes off as a very bitter old man.

Nobody took the guy seriously in 72 and nobody but the moonbats at Daily Kos care what he has to say today.

However, let me be the first to pat him on the back for carrying Massachusetts.  What a great accomplishment for a Democrat.

That I do agree on.  On the flip side, many of those that ran and lost but had career military experience have had terrible credibility and character about them, so there is more to the story.

LBJ did the same exact thing in 1964. He bugged Goldwaters campaign aircraft, so don't treat nixon like he was something out of place at the time.

The difference being, of course, that Johnson didn't get caught. Wink

He had been out of office for over twenty years and just barely won MN in 1984. They had other candidates.

At least Coleman was better than Ashcroft, who couldn't even beat the guy who just died in the plane crash.
