I would love to see the day when the U.S. and U.K. could return to plentiful, native, coal power in an environmentally sound way.

Think of the positive ramifications.

I'd love to be able to tell the middle-east to shove it.

The US already generates most of its electricity from coal and nuclear.  Oil provides very little of our electricity.  Oil is used primarily in situations where the flexibility of internal or turbine combustion outweigh the efficincy of steam turbines and the infrastructure for gas isn't available.  Clean coal (for the US at least) won't do much to reduce the usage of oil.
