In a not-quite-suprising upset, John Dibble mixes a centrist colition of disenfranchised republicans and conservative democrats to split the south, pick up much of the rust belt, and most of the western states.
Though originally disdained by many congress for being a third party candidate, he wins over would be fascists by encouraging them to take up smoking.
An number of compromise measures are passed, gradually decreasing redundnacy in government operation, increasing individual liberties for American citizens, and a greater transperancy in government.
Both parties try to quietly court his membership, while some fellow libertarians complain loudly that he is actually a "damn statist" and try to get him thrown out of the party.
He easily wins renomination anyway with a swelling base of "reform libertarians" made up of former centrists from both parties while the hardcore purists break off to form their own party.
Minus their center, the two parties nominate someone more partisan candidates, and dibble picks up reelection easily.
A few minor scandals pop up - some having to do with staffers now participating in now legal activities, a few with his supposed connections to xenu made by a certain cult, and one very silly one because of his lack of an official position on communist strippers.
Heck - I'd seriously consider voting for him. He's a bright guy.
