Fred Thompson's essays, speeches, commentaries, whatever you want to call them.

I'm not aware of any other major candidate doing this. It's reminiscent of Reagan's radio commentaries from the '70s.

Thompson is very good at it. He writes very well.

Is it a good idea? Should other candidates try to do this? Is there a big risk to it?

Seriously? He seems like quite the dullard- his recent piece mocking international criticism of the US was one of the worst things I've read in awhile.

Should other candidates try to do this?

Not if they're as dumb as Fred Thompson.
