Sunderland: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/shared/vote2007/councils/html/cm.stm

My guess is that there weren't enough challengers to theoretically be able to unseat Labour. After all, it's been Labour-controlled continuously since 1973!

Tamworth reporting in. Con hold; Con gain three seats from Labour. Now 23-5 with 2 Independents. Dismal showing for Labour; they had control as recently as 2003.

Recount for one last ward in Kingston-upon-Hull, but it looks as if the Lib Dems have taken 6 seats from Labour and gained control. Labour were largest party with NOC before the election.

Nevermind, i found the BBC one blanket coverage, its blurry as hell, but I'm sure it looks the same for Labour watching at home.

It's official; Lib Dems gain control in Kingston-upon-Hull, winning five seats from Labour and one from an independent.

Yeah; that was widely predicted. Before this election, Labour held a load of wards that had voted LibDem, and quite strongly IIRC, in 2006.

Well, it was still the first interesting result of the night.

Don't count on that happening too much.

Con hold Brentwood, two gains from the LDs. Also hold Peterborough, apparently with no change. Peterborough is one of the last outposts of the Liberal Party; they have 3 councillors there.

Lib Dems hold West Lindsey. Must have either stayed steady or had Lib Dems gain from Con because any Lib Dem loss to Con would have made it NOC.

Most of the Shrewsbury wards are in; Tories did well, Labour really curiously mixed. Some decent results (nearly gained Castlefields & Quarry... if only turnout had been ever-so-slightly higher...) mixed in with some dire ones (nearly lost Sundorne!).

BNP loses one in Broxbourne

I was thinking there might be an even further consolidation (at the expense of everyone) of Tory votes in the South, this might be an early indicator.

BNP lose their only councillor in Broxbourne!

Sadly, they have another, at least according to the BBC.

Wait, never mind, misread it. Broxborne is BNP-free.

I was thinking there might be an even further consolidation (at the expense of everyone) of Tory votes in the South, this might be an early indicator.

That's really not what the Tories want, though. Increasing their majorities in the South doesn't help them win Councils or seats.

Sorry to jinx you Wink

The Broxbourne result was strange, I was expecting the BNP to improve their performance.. They may well have done but not to the same extent as the Tories, so i think you could be right..

Tunbridge CON +4 at expense of both LD and LAB

Jesus, if the Tories can wrap up like this across the south despite a lurch left by Cameron, the sweat is on for Brown in a general election, I don't care what the pundits say.

Lab gain a seat from an Indy in Worcester, but Con hold. Con gain 3 seats from LD and 1 from Lab in Tunbridge Wells to hold.

Errr... No? Doesn't matter how big your majorities are in your safe seats.

Four Indy gains in Swale, two from LD and two from Con. Con hold. Lab hold Halton while losing two seats to the LDs. Lab hold Easington gaining two seats from Indies.

Lab hold Wigan; Lab gain 3 seats and Con gain 1, LD lose 2 and Indies lose 2. Not sure which went where.

Becuase safe turnouts will be completely isolated from the national picture?
