Don't Sin Taxes serve as quite a great way to make revenue?

Per the OSPR, Article 4, Section 1;
1. After a piece of legislation is introduced on the Senate floor, debate shall begin immediately. Debate on the legislation shall last for no less than seventy-two (72) hours.

2. If debate on the legislation under consideration has halted for longer than twenty-four (24) hours and the amount of debate time that the legislation has been given exceeds seventy-two (72) hours, any senator may call for a vote on said legislation.

3. Debate shall proceed after the first seventy-two (72) hours as long as a senator is posting on the thread which details the legislation under consideration, provided intervals between different speeches are no longer than twenty-four (24) hours.

The 72 hours recently passed when you made your comment, however, I'm of the opinion that PBrunsel's comment qualifies as debate and will be letting this continue for the requisite 24 hours.

How so, might I ask? I can see some good reasons to get rid of the Sin Tax, especially since it's abolition will bring down black market smuggling, so don't get me wrong I could support this. I would simply like to see where the revenue it does make would come from, and if the states that use the revenur for special projects could make the same amount with their own state sin tax.

Only major problem that I have is with the loss of revenue for the federal government especially during a budget deficit. It would be nice to know what the amount of lost revenue would be but that's probably impossible to calculate.

Doesn't this include taxes on porn, alcohol and tobacco?

If so, I support repealing it for the first two, but not the last. In that case I'll introduce an amendment to keep the tax on tobacco.

Sin Taxes are great sources of revenue.  I am all for cutting taxes but realize the government needs to make funds, therefore we should have optional taxes to do that.  I support raising the sin tax even higher and cutting other taxes that cripple Atlasians.

The text of section 1 is replaced with:

All taxes on alcohol and pornography are repealed.

The "sin" tax is just a tax on the poor.  Granted, that's probably a group of Atlasians you're happy to see crippled, so it's unnecessary to mention it.

How are we supposed to argue about this, anyway?  People come in and say, "It's a great source of revenue"?  Are you GM?  Do you even know anything about economics?  No, you don't.  Your positions are just parroted out of the latest Sean Hannity book or wherever you spent your time before finding this forum.

I will note, though, that during the original bill's debate the then-GM implied sin taxes were not a great source of revenue.

Lung cancer lovers. I'll still vote for the bill, since the taxes on alcohol and pornography are complete travesties.
