Well, I got into UC San Diego three weeks ago and it will probably be my definitive choice this fall.

I was wondering if anybody has any first hand experience with San Diego? What is the city like?Etc.

I know nothing about the city but this is what Ron Burgundy would tell you...

"Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a whale's vagina."

Couldn't help quote from a great movie there!

It's fairly spread out.  Relatively few Black people (that was a culture shock for me); a lot of Hispanics and Asians.  Population is Republican; it's a Navy town as well.  It's a clean, modern city.

The downtown is fairly intact; plenty of malls too.   Balboa Park is nice.  The weather gets overcast at times.  From what I've heard, mass transit is good; they have trolleys.

UC San Diego is north and near the beach.

San Diego is a nice city, especially due to all the military down there, but also because you can go to any "climate" within an hour or two, so you shouldn't be bored.  Best of luck in school, and stay focused.

First, San Diego ISN'T a Republican city; part are, but most of the people (especially in the college & beach areas) are quai-libertarian.
I have a brother that lives in the Ocean Beach neighborhood, (I have visieted quite often) very laid-back area, alot of small community-based businesses. The Mass-Transit is good, you can even take the train to right near the Mexican border.

Democrats hold a 5-3 majority in the city council
the Mayor is a Republican

I have it on good authority that San Diego is going to be nuked in a terrorist attack in 2150.  So I would get out before then.
