Used to be a real ultra-Thatcherite but has become a Cameroonian 'liberal conservative'. I'm surprised he hasn't had a higher profile under Cameron's leadership.

He moved way to the left before Cameron had jumped on the bandwagon.

I know his wife is a Labour activist.

I felt at one point he might jump ship.

Ditto. IIRC he was fairly high-profile before Cameron became leader (he was constantly on Question Time and was wheeled out as the "nice" Conservative, as in "We got one! We do!"), but he hasn't really been seen much since.

Went through a similar transition to that of Michael Portillo. Still good cabinet material
