I can't find it on the internet, but I saw this one picture in the newspaper of this one house that was basically a garage that got remodeled into a house on the market for "only" $150,000 or so.

Rin-chan

Please, $39K is expensive. Check out this dream house for under ten grand:

http://homes.realtor.com/search/listingdetail.aspx?ctid=2000089&mxp=6&typ=7&sid=3c8cd54175464a8f8e067b82a73c9b1a&lid=1076079131&lsn=2&srcnt=46#Detail

Funny thing is my dad grew up not too far from there. The house probably sold for about the same price in the 50s.

Wow.  I didn't even know you could buy a house for under $100,000 let alone $10,000!

To be fair, these houses are completely uninhabitable. They're basically just decaying shells, and parts of town are full of them. They have to be priced so low because nobody wants them. To be good for anything, they'd need major work, after which they'd still only rent for about $400/month because they're in a slum, and good luck finding a responsible tenant who'd live over there. Not really an attractive investment. I think BRTD should put his money where his mouth is and buy one of these beauties. Here's one that at $2500, I'm sure he could afford:

As for cheap places in New Jersey:

I want a place that at least has basic utilities. I don't care if it's in a slum though. Anyway, the bad parts of Memphis are WAY WAY different from anywhere in Minneapolis.

This is some sort of joke, right?

Buffalo, NY
2 units, 2118 square feet
$1900
I don't know if I can make those mortgage payments of $9 a month.

Haha.

I've sometimes seen rental houses listed as for sale.  $1,900/mo. seems a bit more reasonable.

Heck, I have $1,900; I should go and take them up on it.  "Yes, here is your $1,900, I would like to buy this house."

I have seen those before, they come with warnings, that basically the home is a dump and a half and it can't be lived in.

This is a Minneapolis house costing $19k.

And under the description:

Read The Following Carefully: House Is Condemned-As Is Addendum Will Be Required. Call Selling Agent For Additional Information

That is a palace compared to some of the student-inhabited homes in downtown Mankato. And of course even those are palaces compared to places I've seen on Reservations.

How does property work on the reservation? Are non-tribe member allowed to buy real estate?

That might depend on the reservation.

I know the Port Madison Reservation here is only like 7.6% Indian.

Depends on the area, but usually, most Reservations have a significant white population and some are even majority white. I'd be very surprised if any tribal leaders were to deprive the Reservation of important economic investment which is what prohibiting non-tribal members from buying property would do. I lived in a majority-white neighborhood on one where all the houses were owned by the federal government and rented out. My parents paid $250/month for a 4 bedroom house in the early 90s!

BTW, in rural North Dakota there are even tons of white areas that have houses in similar condition. There's lots of unincorporated suburbs around Bismarck-Mandan where you have the original core town which is typically a giant dump that it's hardly to believe isn't a ghost town (though most probably will be in 20-30 years), and then surrounding the countryside a bunch of newly built homes populated by wealthy commuters. The best example is Fort Rice, at least the Reservation towns have paved roads and streetlights and the houses are arranged in a typical fashion, Fort Rice is just a bunch of old houses scattered at random with some dirt roads, a falling apart old church, a gas station and some scary trailers. But most of the county roads around it lead to some areas of giant rural homes.

Want to talk about cheap housing values?

http://www.city-data.com/city/Almont-North-Dakota.html

If you didn't mind living in a rural dump, you could get yourself a house there, and commute to work in Bismarck-Mandan (it wouldn't take that long since most of it's the interstate).

This trailer was listed for $14,500 in a mobile home park.  This doesn't necessarily count as "real estate", though:

This home is in the city limits and is selling for $44,900.
